Parent Coaching

Parent coaching is designed to provide insight, help parents discover newfound energy in their parenting, develop an appreciation for what they have and who they are, and create sustainable ways to achieve their vision or dream for their family.  Different than therapy, coaching’s unique methodology allows the coach to provide support as a cheerleader, guide, and mirror. Coaching is perfect for helping parents who are feeling overwhelmed, parents who are baffled by their children’s behavior, parents who are looking to bolster their parenting “tool box,” and parents who simply want to take their family’s life from good to great. I offer many different types of parent coaching packages as described below.

The Heartful Transformation Coaching Package

This package, our most popular, is for those parents looking to create transformative and sustainable change in order to bring more joy and connection to their families and create an enriching environment for the optimal growth and development of both children and parents alike.  Over the course of three to four months, we work collaboratively to build a deeper understanding and appreciation for what is and is not working in your family system, visualize a clear picture of your ideal future for both self and family, and then work backwards from that ideal to design specific action steps that will help you achieve your dream.

Trusting that you are the expert on your family, I guide and support you in fostering a deeper connection between family members, building increased confidence in parenting decisions, and cultivating more peace and calmness at home.  I do this using living systems theory, appreciative inquiry™, positive discipline principles, brain compatible parenting™, and tools from a spectrum of parenting philosophies in order to generate energy, intention, and solutions.

This coaching package includes:

  • Twelve individual one-hour sessions.

  • My undivided attention and compassionate support to address any parenting and family-life challenges.

The Clarity Coaching Package

This package is designed for parents who are struggling with just one or two parenting issues that they would like help addressing with the support and guidance of a coach. Over approximately two months, we work together to identify the source of the struggle, evaluate and clarify the reasons for the issue/misbehavior, and explore solutions designed to the optimize the parent-child dynamic.  In a more concentrated, limited manner than available through the Heartful Transformation Package, we will explore what is and is not working, visualize a clear picture of the parent’s ideal result, and then work backwards from that ideal to design specific action steps that will help you achieve your desired outcome.

Just as in the Heartful Transformation Package, we begin with the understanding and belief that you are the expert on your family.  I then guide and support you in finding sustainable solutions to the issue at hand, all while fostering a deeper connection between family members, building increased confidence in parenting decisions, and cultivating more peace and calmness at home.  I do this using living systems theory, appreciative inquiry™, positive discipline principles, brain compatible parenting™, and tools from a spectrum of parenting philosophies in order to generate energy, intention, and solutions.

The Heartful-Self Coaching Package

We’ve all heard the saying that as parents we need to put our own oxygen masks on first. But there is often a disconnect between knowing that self-care is of critical importance, and actually engaging in it.  That chasm is often driven by (among other things) a lack of time, a lack of sleep, a lack of energy, a lack of wherewithal, a lack of know-how, and/or the tendency to put ourselves on the back burner or forget who they were as individuals.  This package is designed for the parent who is desperate for some “me time”: the parent who remembers finding time to exercise, see a show, date his or her parenting partner, be creative, read a book, enjoy hobbies, or just take a shower but is struggling to find time for those things as a parent. We will work together to build a deeper understanding and appreciation for the barriers to self-care, envision an ideal future where you put yourself “on the list,” and then work backwards from that ideal to design specific action steps that will help you begin investing in yourself again.

This coaching package includes:

  • Four individual one-hour sessions.

  • My undivided attention and compassionate support to address any self-care needs.

  • Email and text support throughout as needed or requested to address ongoing challenges.

  • One 15-minute phone support call as needed during the duration of the coaching as requested by the client.

  • For an additional fee, I will provide a more comprehensive summary of our coaching session including a breakdown of your successes and challenges, science-based parenting information, strategic suggestions, external resources, and things to consider over the course of the following week.

Specifics:

  • Coaching takes place by phone or via Zoom.  Parents local to the greater Seattle area may request in-person meetings at an additional cost for travel time and mileage.

  • Cost is $150 per session for one parent; $175 for two.

  • To receive detailed written summaries after each session there is an additional fee of $75 per session.

  • This coaching package is not available for couples.

The Before Baby Coaching Package

Expecting a baby can be wonderful and exciting—and also really scary.  Adding a child to a partnership can engender lots of uncertainty.  “How will the child affect our marriage?  How will the child affect our careers and/or personal goals?  How will the child affect my sense of self? How will my partner and I co-parent effectively and navigate the challenges that a child adds to any family?  How will we manage extended family? What will we do for childcare? How will we weather the transitions and keep the lines of communication open?”:  these are all questions that expectant couples often ask themselves, but struggle to answer.  This coaching package is designed for those couples who are expecting a new little one, or who have just recently added a little one to the mix and want to prepare for this new world of parenthood with intentionality, focus, and a unified vision for the future.  Together we will work collaboratively to build a deeper understanding and appreciation for this transitional period, visualize a clear picture of your ideal future for both self and family, and then work backwards from that ideal to design specific action steps that will help the parent achieve their dream.  This package is designed to help parents feel more supported and prepared as they look forward to their baby’s arrival.

This coaching package includes:

  • Eight individual one-hour sessions.

  • My undivided attention and compassionate support to address whole-life preparation for the arrival of a new baby.

  • Email and text support throughout as needed or requested to address ongoing challenges.

  • Two 15-minute phone support calls as needed during the duration of the coaching as requested by the client.

Specifics:

  • Coaching takes place by phone or via Zoom.  Parents local to the greater Seattle area may request in-person meetings at an additional cost for travel time and mileage.

  • Cost for two parents is $175 per session.

  • For parents who will be single-parenting, please contact us to discuss pricing options.

The Heartful Mission Package

Among groups, having a clear sense of belonging, purpose, and shared values contributes to a healthier dynamic, a stronger sense of self, and a more vision-driven path forward; it creates a sense of hopefulness that allows its members to weather adversity and maintain focus with more success.  Armed with this knowledge, companies and organizations the world over create mission statements to provide their members with a deep understanding and appreciation of their core values and to provide ongoing guidance.  The power of these statements is in their vision; research shows that families can benefit from vision as much or even more than a company.

In light of that, this package is for the family that is generally thriving but wants to elevate its game from pretty good to really great.  Created for families local to the greater Seattle area, this package is designed to help families create powerful visions for their future, thus giving each member of the family a clear sense of the values it operates on, an understanding of where the family is headed, and the power to make decisions consistent with that mission. Over approximately 4-5 months, I will guide your family through self-discovery and experiential activities all designed to address and help create a vision for the hearts, bodies, minds, and spirits of each family member.

This coaching package includes:

  • Seven family sessions totaling ten to twelve hours.

  • My undivided attention and compassionate support during those hours.

  • A written summary after each session that includes strategic suggestions, external resources, and do-at-home work.

  • Email and text support throughout as needed or requested to address ongoing challenges with the process.

  • An artistic rendering suitable for display of the completed mission statement created by a local artist can be requested an additional cost.

Specifics:

  • Coaching for this package takes place in person in the family’s home and is available only in the greater Seattle area.

  • Cost is $2500 with potential additional costs for travel time and mileage depending on location. A deposit of $1000 is due before the commencement of coaching.

  • This package is also available for couples who have not yet had children (or don’t intend to), but are looking to create a forward-thinking vision for their future; please contact me to discuss pricing options for this.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who should hire a parent coach?

The wonderful thing about coaching is how many different types of parents it can help. Coaching is for parents beset by feelings of overwhelm and struggle, parents baffled by their child’s behavior, parents looking to bolster their parenting “tool box”, parents committed to parenting intentionally and examining their own parenting choices, and/or parents simply looking to take their family’s life from good to great. It’s for parents that have read every parenting book out there and are struggling to make sense of them or find what works for them, and parents who have no time or interest in reading any parenting books and do better working one-on-one with a guide.  Coaching is as individualized as the client!

How does the process work?

As a coach, I work collaboratively and co-constructively with my clients to help them live into their best selves and their ideal futures for themselves, their children, and their family as a whole.  I help my clients identify what is currently working in their homes and help them figure out ways to “grow the positives.”  I am energized by each of my clients and this helps me to show up and be present as my true self as I provide accountability and action steps to help you realize your dream future.  We will spend time identifying your unique strengths and how we can harness those strengths to tackle whatever challenges you are facing. And although I have knowledge and training, we will work together to craft solutions that work for you and your family; after all, you are the expert on your family just as I am the expert on mine.  I may make suggestions or provide information where needed, but I will never dictate how things should be done.  You and I will be in partnership throughout the change process as we craft creative, sustainable, and sometimes outside-the-box solutions so that you can experience long-term success.

What is the difference between parent coaching and therapy?

In truth, there can be many similarities between them depending on the style of any given practitioner in either field.  However, as a general matter, therapy is focused on interpersonal health and identifiable issues, such as depression or anxiety.  Its attention tends to be retrospective, addressing and repairing damage from earlier experiences.  In contrast, coaching is typically future based, and tends to be more “goal directed, action based, and outwardly defined.” In coaching, the coach and client tend to work in a collaborative partnership where, although the coach may have expertise and make suggestions, the solutions are generated as a team within which the client takes responsibility for his or her own process and outcomes.  Coaching provides more flexibility in theory and practice to help spur clients into action and move them forward in a positive direction.  For more information see Hart, V. et al. (2001). “Coaching Versus Therapy: A Perspective.” Consulting Journal: Practice and Research, Vol. 53 (No. 4), pp 229-37.

Are you like a “super nanny?”

Gloria DeGaetano from the parent Coach Institute explains this best when she emphatically says, “Not at all! Television programs like Super Nanny invade the home and assume lots of incompetence on the part of the parents, even deriding their decision-making abilities. We believe such programs, developed mainly for titillation and amusement, have very little to do with the reality of most parents today. These shows deal mostly with over-the-top issues that affect a very small percentage of actual parents. In addition, the behaviorist approach used on these shows by the nanny may be effective in the short-term, but will be unlikely to result in long-term positive, sustainable changes. PCI parent coaching offers a highly respectful, affirmative approach that catalyzes parent creativity, helping moms and dads discover their unique solutions and providing long-term positive changes.”

Will you judge my parenting?

No!  Parenting is the toughest job any of us take on and we are all doing our best—the fact that you are on this website tells me you care deeply about that.  We can only do as well as we can do, and when we know more we can do better. A coach should absolutely not serve to judge your parenting or make you feel bad or guilty for past decisions. A coach should be a partner and a guide in helping you learn different approaches to your parenting that will help you bring more love, joy, and connection to your family.  I have no stake in the outcome (like a friend or family member might) of our time together, so I am able to cheer you on from the sidelines without feeling attached to how you get there.  My job is simply to help you see the big picture and then design personal action steps to help you fit all the pieces of your individual and family puzzle together in a way that helps you experience your most authentic self!
